Robert G. Eccles is a Visiting Professor of Management Practice at the Said Business School, University of Oxford as well as a Visiting Lecturer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sloan School of Management and was a Professor at Harvard Business School. Bob is Chairman of KKS Advisors, is a member of the board of TruValue Labs and a member of the board of the Mistra Center for Sustainable Markets at the Stockholm School of Economics.

He was the founding Chairman of the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board and one of the founders of the International Integrated Reporting Council. Bob was selected as one of the Top 100 Thought Leaders in Trustworthy Business Behavior and was named Honorary Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA). Dr. Eccles received an S.B. in Mathematics and an S.B. in Humanities and Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and an A.M. and Ph.D. in Sociology from Harvard University.

Charles Penner is responsible for communications and legal strategy for activist investments. Prior to joining JANA Partners LLC in 2005, Charles was a Senior Associate at Schulte Roth & Zabel focusing on M&A and contests for corporate control including proxy contests. Before that he was an M&A Associate in the business development group at General Electric focusing primarily on NBC.

Before GE, he was an Associate at Cravath, Swaine & Moore focusing on transactions in media, telecom and entertainment. Before law school, Charles worked as Deputy Communications Director for U.S. Senator Max Baucus, a Communications Aide for U.S. Senator Barbara A. Mikulski, and as a White House intern. Mirtha Kastrapeli

Mirtha Kastrapeli is Global Head of State Street’s Center for Applied Research. She has co-authored multiple papers including the award-winning studies Discovering Phi: Motivation as the Hidden Variable of Performance in 2016 and ‘The Folklore of Finance; How Beliefs and Behaviors Sabotage Success in the Investment Management Industry’ in 2014. Most recently, she co-authored the study The Investing Enlightenment: How Principle and Pragmatism Can Create Sustainable Value through ESG, with Prof. Bob Eccles, which proposes a five-step model for effective ESG integration. Each year, she presents her research at dozens of conferences and client events globally, including Barron’s, Institutional Investor and Sovereign Investor Institute.

Mirtha has over 14 years of experience in the private and public sector, analyzing capital markets and helping shape public policy. She spent six years as a Global Macro Strategist at State Street Global Markets in Boston. In the public sector, Mirtha served as an advisor to the Secretary General of the Ministry of Economics in Nicaragua. Mirtha also worked at the Economic and Commercial Office of the US Embassy in Managua, where she received a Meritorious Honor Award by the US Department of State. Mirtha earned a bachelor’s degree with honors in Finance and Economics from Ave Maria College in Nicaragua and a Master’s Degree in Business Administration (M.B.A.) from the Brandeis International Business School.

Aniket Shah

Jon Lukomnik

Jon Lukomnik has served as executive director of the Investor Responsibility Center Institute (IRRCi) since 2008. He and the Board of Directors have led the organization to become a leading source of objective academic and practitioner research on an array of investment issues to enable investors, policymakers and stakeholders to make data-driven decisions.

Jon received the International Corporate Governance Network award for excellence in corporate governance, and the National Association of Corporate Directors twice (2011 and 2012) named him one of the 100 most influential people in American corporate governance. Other awards include recognition by Ethishpere Magazine and Global Proxy Watch.

In addition to his responsibilities at IRRCi, Jon is the managing partner of Sinclair Capital L.L.C., a strategic consultancy to the investment management industry, corporations and institutional investors. He writes a column for Compliance Week, and he is a member of the Standing Advisory Group of the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board.

Previously, Jon served as investment advisor to the New York City pension funds. He chaired the executive committee of the Council of Institutional Investors, and he co-founded and served as a governor of the International Corporate Governance Network.

His new book, What They Do With Your Money: How the Financial System Fails Us and How to Fix it has been praised by former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown, former Senator Chris Dodd, former Barclays’ chairman Sir David Walker, Vanguard Founder Jack Bogle, former Royal Dutch Shell chairman Sir Mark Moody Stewart, and Yale Chief Investment Officer David Swenson, among others. Jim Hawley, PhD is Head, Applied Research at TruValue Labs, San Francisco, California, which provides advanced analytics to create sustainability metrics using real-time ESG data. He is also Professor Emeritus of Management, School of Economics and Business, and Senior Research Fellow, Elfenworks Center for Responsible Business at Saint Mary College of California.

Jim is the author of The Rise of Fiduciary Capitalism (2001) and co-editor of Corporate Governance Failures: The role of institutional investors in the global financial crisis.(2011), The Cambridge Handbook of Institutional Investment and Fiduciary Duty (2014), The Routledge Handbook of Responsible Investment (2015) and The Purpose of Asset Management (2018).

John Arabadjis, PhD

John is a managing director and Head of GX Labs, State Street’s center for R&D in data science, where his team develops analytics for sustainable investing and multi-asset risk management.  Before establishing GX Labs John led State Street’s behavioral research group at State Street Associates®, creating models of market participant behavior and applying these to quantitative asset management.  Prior to joining State Street in 2005, John was an astrophysicist at MIT studying dark matter, galaxy clusters and black holes, and has held research and teaching positions at Emmanuel College, the University of Michigan and the University of Massachusetts.  He has taught courses in physics, astrophysics, applied mathematics, energy production and climate change, and has authored/coauthored roughly 40 articles in journals and conference proceedings, including the Journal of Portfolio Management, the Astrophysical Journal, Advances in Space ResearchNuclear Physics B and the Astronomical Journal.  His research has been profiled in media outlets including the New York Times, Science, and Discover.  John has a PhD in astrophysics from the University of Michigan.

Michael Garland

Michael Garland is Assistant Comptroller for Corporate Governance and Responsible Investment for New York City Comptroller Scott M. Stringer. The Comptroller serves as investment advisor, custodian and a trustee to the New York City Pension Funds, which have more than $170 billion in assets and a long history of active ownership on issues of corporate governance and sustainability.

Michael and his team are responsible for developing and implementing the Funds’ active ownership programs for public equities, including voting proxies, engaging portfolio companies on their environmental, social and governance policies and practices, and advocating for regulatory reforms to protect investors and strengthen shareowner rights. Recent initiatives include spearheading the Boardroom Accountability Project launched in fall 2014, which has helped to establish proxy access as a fundamental right at hundreds of U.S. companies.

Michael serves on the Council of Institutional Investors’ Board of Directors and the Broadridge Independent Steering Committee, and is Comptroller Stringer’s designated representative to the CERES board of directors.

Andrew Lee

Andrew joined UBS Global Wealth Management's Chief Investment Office in July 2012 and currently serves as Head of Sustainable and Impact Investing, supporting clients with investment advice, strategy and thought leadership in these areas. Prior to this, he was Deputy Global Head of the CIO Ultra High Net Worth / Alternatives / Sustainable and Impact Investing group, with specific responsibility for the Impact Investing and Private Markets teams. Andrew is a Managing Director based in New York.

Prior to joining UBS, Andrew was Managing Director overseeing investments for a private New York based single family office. In this capacity, he was responsible for managing asset allocation, theme development, due diligence and execution of all direct and indirect investments for the family investment vehicles including foundation assets. Previously, Andrew was part of a long/short equity.

Rachel Weiss

Rachel joined Thomson Reuters in 2006 and is now responsible for leading the Market Development Team focused on Buy-Side & Wealth Management. Her responsibilities include business development, strategy & execution, with a high level of accountability for sales and revenue performance. Her team focuses on market engagement on the topic of sustainable investing including adoption of sustainability strategies and ESG data integration.

Rachel earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Management & Economics from Tulane University, A.B. Freemen School of Business. She continued on with a Master of Science from NYU Center for Global Affairs where she focused on the role of private sector in emerging issues such as corporate power and social responsibility.

Thomas Kuh, PhD

Thomas Kuh was Executive Director, ESG Indexes, at MSCI from 2010 to 2017. In this role, he engaged with leading global asset owners and asset managers on the development and adoption of ESG indexes for investment products and as policy benchmarks. He spearheaded the launch of innovative low carbon indexes, initiated the collaboration with Bloomberg Barclays to develop the first family of ESG fixed income indexes, and significantly grew assets in index-linked products.

Thomas joined MSCI in 2010 following the acquisition of the RiskMetrics Group, where he was Head of ESG Indexes. He joined RiskMetrics through its acquisition of KLD Research & Analytics in 2009. During his 17 years at KLD, he held multiple roles, including Research Analyst, Business Development Director and finally Managing Director of KLD Indexes.

A prominent member of the ESG community, he was a director of Sustainable Investment Research International Company, the predecessor of Sustainalytics, from 2004-2009. He served on the board of directors of the US SIF, the industry trade organization for sustainable and responsible investors in the US from 2000-2006.

Prior to working at KLD, Thomas was a Professor of Economics at Simmons College and a Teaching Fellow at Harvard University. He received his MA and PhD in Economics from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst and his BA from Hampshire College.

 

Philip Palanza

Phil is a Senior Research Analyst at State Street’s Center for Applied Research (CAR). He co-authored CAR’s most recent paper Discovering Phi: Motivation as the Hidden Variable of Performance.

Phil joined CAR from the Boston-based research firm Cerulli Associates, where he focused on institutional asset management. He contributed to research on topics such as market sizing, asset allocation, strategy, and product design. Prior to working in financial research, Phil served in state government as a staff director and contributed to health policy research on ACA implementation, Medicaid reform, and retiree benefit reform.

Phil holds degrees in economics and French from Wake Forest University and an MS in applied economics from Boston College.
